Kani is the most demanding weave in Kashmir. The pattern is not printed or stitched but built on the loom, colour by colour, from small wooden spools, at roughly an inch a day. Ours sets a single figure in a wide plain ground, in two close tones. Months of work for something that reads, at a glance, as almost nothing. Numbered, and woven only once.
